I just got back from my favorite city, Las Vegas, where I got to see the Blues Brothers, Let’s Make a Deal, and Blue Man Group, among many other things. This city is where my parents got married, where I won the National Open Scholastic Chess Championship, and where I attended college at UNLV. I recommend for anybody to see this city at least once, and here are 101 reasons why they should.

  1. There’s basically no humidity.
  2. You can get a suntan.
  3. The whole city is surrounded by mountains.
  4. You can leave a winner.
  5. Many strip clubs, no comment.
  6. You can pay to have strippers sent to your room.
  7. You can get parts of your body waxed, like a back, sac, and crack wax.

You can stay at one of the most luxurious hotels in the world, like the Wynn, Bellagio, Venetian, and Caesars Palace.

  8. You can get a spa treatment.
  9. You can play golf, even at night.
  10. You can stay at one of the most luxurious hotels in the world, like the Wynn, Bellagio, Venetian, and Caesars Palace.
  11. You can admire the architecture of the casinos.
  12. Some of the greatest magicians can be seen there, such as David Copperfield, Penn & Teller, Lance Burton, and Criss Angel.
  13. Some of the best musicians perform there, such as Cher, Donny and Marie Osmond, Barry Manilow, and Tom Jones.

1. Thriller
Originally released on the Thriller album on November 30, 1982, Thriller is considered to be one of Michael Jackson’s signature songs.   The bassline for this song was inspired by Rick James’ 1981 hit, Give It To Me Baby.  Vincent Price, famous for his voice used in horror films, performed the rap in this song (although it was more of a soliloquy) in the Thriller album.  It, however, didn’t appear in the single version.

Even after 27 years, Thriller, the album, remains the most successful of all time, selling over 110 million units worldwide (second is AC/DC’s Back in Black, with only 49 million albums sold – less than half as much).  Seven of the nine songs on the album were released as singles (The Girl is Mine, Billie Jean, Beat It, Wanna Be Startin’ Something, Human Nature, P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing), and Thriller), all making the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100 list.

Thriller was released as a single in the United States on January 23, 1984.  Coincidentally, Hulk Hogan defeated the Iron Sheik that day in the WWF Championship.  Fittingly, Thriller became the theme song for Championship Wrestling the next two years.

The 25th anniversary of the album was released in the United States on February 12, 2008.  It reached the top ten in over thirty national charts.  Thriller 25 included the songs from the original album plus Vincent Price’s voice-over session, an unreleased track from [view more...]

2. Monster Mash
Originally released on Bobby “Boris” Pickett’s 1962 The Original Monster Mash album, along with several other monster-themed tunes, it reached the number one spot on the Billboard Hot 100 on October 20 of that year, just 11 days before Halloween.

3. Time Warp
This song was featured in the motion picture, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, as well as the musical, The Rocky Horror Show. You can view clips of this song from the movie and the musical here and here.

4. Ghostbusters
Who you gonna call? This is the theme song to the movie, Ghostbusters, and is performed by Ray Parker Jr. He received a lawsuit though for having it sound too much like Huey Lewis and the News’ I Want A New Drug.

5. I’m Your Boogie Man
This was originally released by KC and the Sunshine Band in 1976, reaching #1 on the Billboard Hot 100. It was later covered by White Zombie in 1996. It also has appeared in the movie trailers for Scary Movie 1, 2, 3, and 4 (the song’s played toward the end of each one).

6. Somebody’s Watching Me
This song was originally performed by Rockwell in 1984, featuring Michael Jackson on chorus. This was Rockwell’s only major hit. It
was later covered by Mysto & Pizzi for a series of GEICO
commercials.

12. Halloween Theme
This piano medley, composed by John Carpenter, was the theme
song for the original Halloween movie, the 7 sequels, and the 2 remakes. It’s a pretty simple tune, but it sure helps to freak the hell out of you while you’re watching the films.

13. I Put a Spell On You
This was originally recorded by Screamin’ Jay Hawkins but had been covered many times, most notably by Creedence Clearwater Revival, Nina Simone, The Animals, and Marilyn Manson. It was also performed in the movie Hocus Pocus by Bette Midler.

14. The Munsters Theme
The Munsters ran along with The Addams Family in the 1960s. They were very similar but had 2 main differences: 1) the Munsters were actual monsters while the Addams family were humans and 2) the Munsters were middle-class while the Addams family were wealthy.

15. Purple People Eater
This was performed by Sheb Wooley and reached the #1 spot in the Billboard pop charts in 1958. I wonder if the “one-eyed, one-horned flying purple people eater” was ever able to play in a rock ‘n’ roll band…or if it died of starvation.

16. War Pigs
War Pigs is an anti-war song created by Black Sabbath in 1970. It is the opening track on their best selling album, Paranoid, and is ranked #2 on Digital Dream Door’s “100 Greatest Metal Songs“, behind Hallow Be Thy Name.

22. She Wolf
Released on July 14 as a  single and to appear on the album of the same name November 23, Shakira’s She Wolf is the newest song on this list. There’s also a Spanish version of the song, Loba, which also has been released as a single and to appear on the upcoming album.

23. Love Potion No. 9
This song is about a man who visits a gypsy who reads his palm and gives him love potion no. 9. He then starts kissing everything, including a policeman who ends up breaking his bottle. There was
also a movie of the same name created, starring Sandra Bullock.

24. Funeral March of a Marionette
This was the theme song for Alfred Hitchcock Presents. It’s played in the show’s famous opening, in which there’s a line-drawing of Hitchcock’s profile in the center of the screen and he walks up to match his shadow with the drawing.

25. Bat Out of Hell
This song is from the album of the same name, which is the third best-selling album of all time, behind Michael Jackson’s Thriller and AC/DC’s Back in Black. Lead vocals were performed by Meat Loaf, with some of the musicians from Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band.

26. Trick or Treat
This is the theme song to the horror film Trick or Treat, which had a big focus on heavy metal music. The cover was misleading to a lot of people since it appeared that Gene Simmons and Ozzy Osbourne were the stars of the film, but they both only had cameo appearances in it.

32. Creatures of the Night
Prior to 1982, Kiss’ popularity had really gone downhill, partly due to their changing style of music. With their album, Creatures of the Night, Kiss returns back to the hard rock/heavy metal style that helped them receive their initial success.

33. Riders on the Storm
Inspired by (Ghost) Riders in the Sky, this Doors hit reached #14 in the US in 1971. The lyrics are based on Billy Cook, a mass murderer who posed as a hitchhiker and killed several families. The movie,
The Hitch-Hiker is also based on him.

34. Theme to Gremlins I & II
In 1984, Jerry Goldsmith wrote The Gremlins Rag, the theme song for Gremlins. This won him a Saturn Award for Best Music. It’s a cross between classical, 80’s Madonna, circus, and horror music.
The Gremlins II theme is actually very similar, but more upbeat.

35. Hedwig’s Theme
Composed by John Williams, Hedwig’s Theme first appeared in the prologue of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. It is often referred to as the main theme of the Harry Potter film series, having been played in every film so far.

36. Grim, Grinning Ghosts
This is the theme song for the Haunted Mansion Disney attractions. Its title comes from Shakespeare’s poem Venus and Adonis. It is sung by Thurl Ravescroft, who also did voicework for How the Grinch Stole Christmas, Peanuts’ No Dogs Allowed, and Tony the Tiger.

42. Superstition
Recognizable by its opening drum beat, Superstition has become Stevie Wonder’s signature song. It reached #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and on the soul singles chart in 1972. Wonder has performed this song live on Sesame Street and Soul Train, among many other places.

43. (Ghost) Riders in the Sky
This song has been covered by over 50 performers, including
Johnny Cash and The Outlaws. It was the inspiration for Marvel Comics character, Ghost Rider. It was also performed in Blues Brothers 2000, in a scene similar to that of Rawhide in the first film.

44. Goonies ‘R’ Good Enough
This was a single from The Goonies. The music video included 2 parts; the first debuting before the movie opened in theaters and the second after it opened. The music video featured The Goonies cast, a ton of pro-wrestlers, Steven Spielberg, and Roseanne Barr.

45. I Want Candy
This song was originally recorded by The Strangeloves in 1965, hitting #11 in the U.S. It rehit the charts several times when it was covered by Bow Wow Wow, Aaron Carter, and Spice Girl Melanie C (for the movie I Want Candy starring Carmen Electra).

46. Ding Dong! The Witch is Dead
In a famous scene from The Wizard of Oz, Dorothy’s house lands on the Wicked Witch of the East and the Munchkins celebrate by singing this song. Well..actually they didn’t sing it; it was by uncredited singers with their voices sped up.
